LaRose, authored by Louise Erdrich, breeches the ago old question; Can we sacrifice enough to make another whole?
The Iron family and the Ravich family are friends, neighbors, and family living a world apart in Ojibwa country.
After a tragic accident involving the two families the chasm widens between the Reservation life of the Irons and the white, middle class, life of the Ravichs.
In an attempt to resolve their guilt, caused by the death of Dusty Ravich, the Irons follow a traditional practice giving their own son -LaRose- to the grief stricken Ravich family.
The story that follows unearths ancient family secrets and proposes shifts in alliance; and allegiance; within each family as well as between the two families. LaRose ultimately broached the question “Is there any sacrifice I can make that would make another feel whole?”
