Last week, CBS’s Stephen Colbert issued a challenge to the country: get Cardi B to give the official televised rebuttal to President Trump’s State of the Union Address.
In a tweet on Wednesday night, Colbert wrote “I am starting a petition for the Democrats to let @iamcardib give the rebuttal to the SOTU. Sign it by retweeting this!” So far, more than 77,000 people have co-signed Colbert’s plan.
The tweet came days after the rapper posted a video eviscerating Trump for the longest shutdown in American history.
Cardi noted in her post that the country was in a “hellhole” because Trump’s actions were “f—kin it up” as he held hostage paychecks for 800,000 workers while demanding funding for his border wall.
“Now I don’t wanna hear y’all motherf—ers talking ’bout, ‘Oh, but Obama shut down the government for 17 days,’” she continued.
“Yeah, b—-, for healthcare so your grandma could check her blood pressure and you bitches can go check that p—y at the gynecologist with no motherf—ing problem.”
When news of the request made it to Cardi, she responded tweeting “why not?”
There is no word from Democratic leadership on who will give a response to the State of the Union, or when the speech itself will even take place.
However, with Speaker Pelosi and Sen. Schumer’s last televised response to a Trump speech being panned as a live reenactment of the American Gothic painting, it’s undeniable that a response from team #BardiGang would be a reprieve from politics as usual.
