Jania Wester, District 2 School Board Member

By: BWST Editorial Board

In September of 2018, Jania Wester was appointed to serve as the representative for District 2 on the Tulsa Public Schools Board of Education.  On Tuesday, February 12th, we encourage Tulsa voters to elect her to continue to serve our city on the school board.

The first Latinx representative ever to serve on the board, Wester has worked diligently over these last six months to expand the conversation of equity, diversity and inclusion within TPS and strive to ensure that all children within the district receive an unparalleled education.

Wester has been an educator and school leader for nearly two decades, before transitioning to work with a non-profit organization which serves to implement community resources into classrooms across Tulsa.

Wester’s opponent, a kind man and the owner of a South Tulsa European food store, seeks to bring a business-minded perspective to the board.

Schools, however, are more complex than businesses.  Every single decision made from the school board affects the life trajectories of tens of thousands of our children.  These roles are not testing grounds – they require real experience and devotion to shaping an education environment that serves every student with excellence.

In September, we endorsed Jania in the final round of the appointment process.  Today, we are honored to reaffirm that endorsement and ask the voters of district two to send her back to serve our students and families for another two years.

It is the opinion of the Black Wall Street Times that Jania Wester is the best and most uniquely qualified choice to move our district in the right direction for years to come.

District two includes a diverse set of Tulsa communities and schools, including Booker T. Washington, Will Rogers, Kendall Whittier, G.W. Carver and more.  We encourage readers to review the map below for additional information.

Polls are open on Tuesday, Feb 12 from 7am-7pm. Find your polling place, view your sample ballot and more by clicking here.
