TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa Public Schools Board of Education welcomed a new board member at the Tulsa Board of Education meeting Tuesday evening. Judith Barba Perez is the new representative for District 2. The district also congratulated Suzanne Schreiber who was elected by the board to serve as the interim board vice president.
“We are so excited to welcome Judith Barba Perez to the Board of Education, and look forward to working with her in our efforts to ensure that every student meets their greatest potential,” said Board President Stacey Woolley. “Given the disproportionate impact of this pandemic on the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color community and the cultural and racial composition of our school district, it is of critical importance that our board represents the students and families we serve. We are honored to now have a first-generation immigrant-serving and sharing her unique perspectives with our board in a way that will help us continue our work toward equitable outcomes for all of our students.”Woolley said: “I am also looking forward to working with Interim Board Vice President Suzanne Schreiber. I’d like to thank Jania Wester for her dedication to leadership, and her time on the Board. She will be greatly missed.”
Barba Perez has worked in the non-profit sector for five years supporting parents of Tulsa students in building strong relationships with their schools.
Barba Perez said: “I have worked with parents since I moved to Tulsa, and I’ve seen the challenges our immigrant families have in the United States education system. I am excited to represent the voices of the parents, students, and families in District 2.”
The Tulsa Public Schools Board of Education is an elected board of seven community leaders who serve as the governing body for Tulsa Public Schools. Board members serve four-year terms.
“I am excited to welcome board member Judith Barba Perez and am grateful for her willingness to be part of the important work happening in Tulsa Public Schools,” said Superintendent Deborah A. Gist. “I want to thank Jania Wester for her service to our board of education and to Tulsa Public Schools.”
Gist said: “We are also excited to welcome Suzanne Schreiber into the interim board vice president role as we continue to navigate the challenges with this unprecedented school year.”
The board is responsible for establishing policies under which the district operates while acting within the framework of state and federal laws and meeting the unique needs and concerns of the communities they serve.
