I found a society of Black people who did more than assimilate into Victorian society. They expanded what black and Victorian culture looked like. Thus they proved that cultural identity and personal identity cannot be confined or solely defined by skin tone. This sparked a fervor in me to further immortalize these people through the power of the portrait.
It’s, therefore, essential that we understand that the original charter school movement started decades ago when black educators, black communities throughout the country, and their advocates began to realize that most white educators and their school boards weren’t particularly interested in teaching black children nor funding majority black schools.
Yet, like myself, we go to First Friday Art Crawls, attend free events on Guthrie Green, and promenade near or on the very plaques that mark and commemorate the former majesty of Black Wall Street. Ignorance is no longer an excuse. Apathy is no longer acceptable. We have to activate and lift up our neighbors.
