Days after neighbors recorded a viral video in which white Lawton police officers were captured beating and choking an unarmed black man, community leaders called for a meeting with the Mayor and Chief of police to demand a transparent investigation into the incident and to push for solutions to the lack of trust between local residents and LPD.

Before Velvet Brown-Watts became a married woman, her mother, Bonnie Johnson, who was a nurse, told her never to marry a man who also has the sickle cell trait (SCT).
Brown-Watts is one of the few African Americans knowledgeable about being a carrier of SCT, which is nothing to be ashamed.
“We established the Black Wall Street Chamber of Commerce because the community was asking for a chamber that can advocate for their business, specifically, the black business community. In addition to that, we definitely wanted to make sure that the African American community is actively a part of what’s happening in our city of Tulsa.”
Inmates in the county jail who require treatment for withdrawal beyond the jail’s detox program will be considered candidates for the program, Cooper said. Pregnant women and inmates who are sentenced to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections aren’t eligible for the pilot program, the Tulsa World reported.
The Tulsa Mayor’s Youth Council encourages high school students to become active in the community by participating in local government. Members of the Council will see firsthand the many faces of City government in action and learn how each contributes to the City’s goals of public safety and quality of life. The members will also learn about the political process and how youth can have a voice in local government issues. In short, they’ll have a backstage pass to the City of Tulsa.

There are a few times in my life when I am so fortunate to meet a person who I would consider an American titan, a great personage who simultaneously embodies strength and great intellect — an individual who has contributed significantly to the African American community and this country.
I consider John Whittington Franklin, a man of that stature; although, I am quite sure he would think otherwise because he is the son of John Hope Franklin. And if you are obsessed with African American history, as am I, you would know that John Hope Franklin is the world-renowned scholar who chronicled From Slavery to Freedom.
