Former Vice President Kamala Harris appears increasingly likely to make a run for California Governor, sources say.

Harris, who narrowly lost the Presidential election to Donald Trump in November, returned to her home state in January. Within hours of landing in California on the day of Trump’s inauguration, Harris went to meet with firefighters and community members affected by the LA wildfires.

New polling from Emerson College shows her with a significant lead over other potential Democrats. Roughly 6 in 10 Democrats surveyed (57%) listed Harris as their top choice for California Governor. California operates with a “jungle primary” where the top two candidates, regardless of party, advance to the general election. It’s possible that Harris will face off against another Democrat in November 2026.

Harris likely to decide on historic run for California Governor by the end of the summer

If Harris ultimately enters and wins the race, she will become both California’s first female governor and the first Black Woman elected Governor in the history of the United States.

While a Harris win would likely take her out of the running for President in 2028, it would leave her in charge of the country’s largest state and the fifth largest economy in the world. It would also likely leave Harris as the most powerful opponent to Trump’s agenda in office.

Insiders are quick to note that Harris has yet to make a final decision, but an internal deadline is likely approaching. Politico recently reported that the former Vice President has told supporters that a choice about her next steps will likely come in the next six months. Should Harris announce her bid for California Governor by the end of the summer, it will give her just under one year to campaign before the primary.

Many California officials, including the state’s current Attorney General Rob Bonta, are ready to back Harris if she runs.

“I hope she does [run],” Bonda told Politico. “I have already raised my hand to endorse her, if she does, but I think only Kamala Harris knows the answer.”
