ESPN has shelved the multi-part Colin Kaepernick docuseries on the former NFL quarterback, which was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee.
The network, along with Lee and Kaepernick, released a joint statement citing “creative differences” as the reason for the decision.
This development, which was first confirmed by Lee, brings an end to a project that had been in the works for several years and was highly anticipated by many.
The Documentary’s Journey
The documentary was initially announced in 2020 as part of a deal between The Walt Disney Company and Kaepernick.
Spike Lee, known for his incisive and socially conscious filmmaking, was officially brought on to direct the project in 2022.
The series, tentatively titled “Da Saga of Colin Kaepernick,” was set to use extensive, never-before-seen footage. It was going to provide a “full, first-person account” of his journey from star quarterback to global figure of activism.

The project explored his decision to kneel in protest of racial injustice and police brutality. It also reportedly covered the fallout that led to his effective blackballing from the NFL.
Colin Kaepernick docuseries faced delays and reported disputes
Sources familiar with the production reported that the docuseries faced delays and internal disputes for some time. Reports indicated there were disagreements between the filmmakers and the network, and even between Lee and Kaepernick themselves, over the creative direction of the project.
While Lee reportedly wanted to broaden the scope to include a wider history of Black athletes and social justice, Kaepernick’s vision was more centered on his personal narrative and experiences. Although these creative differences were thought to have been resolved, the project was ultimately halted.
The decision to not move forward with the documentary also comes at a time of increased scrutiny for ESPN.
The network recently finalized a deal where the NFL acquired a 10% ownership stake in ESPN’s media assets. This move raised questions about potential conflicts of interest when covering sensitive topics related to the league.
The timing of the documentary’s cancellation, just weeks after the new partnership was announced, has led some to speculate that the docuseries, which would likely have been critical of the NFL’s handling of Kaepernick’s protest, was seen as a liability.
Silence and Speculation
Following the news, Spike Lee offered a brief but telling statement to Reuters, confirming the documentary was “not coming out.” Lee added that he couldn’t say more because he signed a nondisclosure agreement (NDA).
Kaepernick’s representatives have not offered any public comment.
The lack of detailed information from the involved parties has fueled public speculation.
The cancellation of such a high-profile project, particularly one involving two prominent figures in sports and social commentary, highlights the complex and often precarious intersection of sports, media, and politics.
