The tragic case of former LSU wide receiver and NFL draft prospect Kyren Lacy, who died by apparent suicide days before a grand jury hearing, has been reignited with the release of new video evidence by the Louisiana State Police (LSP).

The release comes in direct response to footage presented by Lacy’s defense attorney. It challenges the official narrative of the fatal December 2024 crash that led to Lacy’s negligent homicide charges.

Lacy was accused of reckless driving

Lacy was accused of recklessly driving—speeding and passing cars in a no-passing zone—on a Louisiana highway. Police contend that a northbound driver, in an effort to avoid a head-on collision with Lacy’s vehicle, swerved and crashed into another vehicle, killing 78-year-old Herman Hall.

Lacy subsequently fled the scene without rendering aid, later turning himself in on charges of negligent homicide, felony hit and run, and reckless operation of a vehicle.

However, nearly six months after Lacy’s death in April 2025, his defense attorney, Matthew Ory, presented surveillance footage from a local news station.

Ory argued the video showed Lacy’s vehicle was approximately 72 yards behind the colliding vehicles at the time of impact and had already returned to his lane of travel, suggesting his actions could not have been the direct cause of the fatal crash.

Ory acknowledged Lacy had passed multiple vehicles illegally earlier, but questioned the culpability given the distance. Furthermore, Ory presented bodycam footage of a State Trooper appearing to guide a witness’s statement.

Police release their own 11 minute video

In a move for “transparency,” the Louisiana State Police released their own 11-minute “Critical Incident Briefing Video,” including a timeline, crash report details, witness interviews, and surveillance footage.

While the LSP’s video shows Kyren Lacy’s Charger and the sound of the collision, the wreck itself remains out of view. Crucially, the LSP clarified they “never reported” that Lacy’s vehicle “impacted” any others.

However, they vehemently stood by their original findings, asserting that “all evidence collected supports the conclusion that Lacy’s reckless operation of the green Charger in oncoming traffic triggered the chain of events involving the other drivers, ultimately resulting in the fatal crash.”

Louisiana Democratic Party calls for “full scale” investigation in Kyren Lacy case

The release of the dueling videos and evidence has intensified the scrutiny on the police investigation. Louisiana’s Attorney General Liz Murrill has stated that she is reviewing all evidence but maintains that “every witness” identified Lacy’s vehicle as having “put the events in motion.”

Meanwhile, the Louisiana Democratic Party has called for a “full-scale” investigation into the “wrongful accusations” against Mr. Lacy, fueled by the contradictions raised by the defense.
