After years of “Back the Blue”, GOP members say “Defund the FBI”

After the FBI raid of twice-impeached former President Trump’s home, many GOP members of Congress have called to defund the FBI.

The FBI conducted an unannounced raid of Trump’s Palm Beach, Mar-A-Lago home yesterday that many in the GOP have called a “political persecution”, despite the fact that a federal magistrate judge approved the federal search warrant.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) claimed in a two-minute video that President Biden sent 30 FBI agents to Mar-A-Lago to “try to politically harm and intimidate [his] political opponents, that’s what this is all about.” Rubio claimed that this precedent will lead the U.S. to “become the third world.”

In a follow-up video, Rubio claimed that the raid was not about classified archive documents that Trump removed from the White House in over 50 boxes and kept at his personal estate, but rather “disqualifying a likely future election opponent.”

“Defund the FBI,” Republicans say.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA) took it a step further tweeting out “DEFUND THE FBI”, a tweet that has over 125k likes.

On Tuesday, in a series of tweets, the representative used language describing a civil war saying “In January, we take on the enemy within” and “we are coming”.

Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee seemed to forget her own words she tweeted back in 2016 when she said “when you’re attacking FBI agents because you’re under criminal investigation, you’re losing.”

Monday night after the raid, Huckabee said “if you’re not yet appalled by the total abuse of power from Democrats in Washington, you’re not paying attention.

Lost in the commotion of GOP members’ sudden about face on law enforcement is the fact that the current Director of the FBI is a man who Trump appointed, having previously called him “a man of impeccable credentials.”

The warrant or warrant application submitted by the FBI has not been released yet, so any implications as to the raid’s purpose is purely speculation.

Trump currently possesses the warrant, as is required by law when a raid is committed, which details where to search, what to search for, and what federal statutes were allegedly violated. So far he has not released any information regarding its contents.
