What’s better than turning your feelings into art that appeals to the masses? Rap fans have been having a ball this year with Drake’s feud and have a new anthem as a result. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” is so popular that it might net him another Grammy nomination.

Recording Academy CEO Praises’ Not Like Us’ and Hints at Possible Grammy Nomination

During an impromptu interview with TMZ, Harvey Mason Jr. discussed the smash record “Not Like Us” and the chance it could be eligible for nomination at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.

“Obviously, it’s a hot record,” said Mason Jr., who became Recording Academy CEO in 2021. “It’s amazing artistry, great writing. The talent on that record is incredible. And you got artists that have been nominated before, and Kendrick obviously has been successful with the organization, so I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t be.”

Mason Jr. continued: “I think the voting members of the academy appreciate greatness. They appreciate what’s hot, what’s going on. That’s a relevant record that’s impacting on so many levels. So much creativity and talent. I like to believe that the academy members recognize that and vote appropriately.”

Mason Jr. went on to say that, you never know, a diss track category could be introduced to the awards ceremony if the academy members vote to make it happen.

“Not Like Us” Breaks YouTube Records and Joins Elite Company of Grammy-Worthy Diss Tracks

Not Like Us” was released on May 4, 2024. Renewed attention to the DJ Mustard-produced track arose when K. Dot took to Compton to shoot the video and released it on YouTube on July 4, 2024.

With 1.3 million views, it broke the record for most views in an hour for a rap song on YouTube in 2024. In just under 24 hours, it reached over 13 million views.

There have only been two other rap diss songs to grace the Grammys—LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out” won “Best Rap Solo Performance” in 1992, and Drake’s “Back to Back” was nominated for “Best Rap Performance” in 2016.

‘Not Like Us’ Dominates Charts Amidst Mixed Reactions and Continues to Impact the Rap Scene

Some think the diss track is too popular. It recently shot to the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 spot again. It’s spent two weeks at No. 1. since its release and 10 weeks total in the top 100.

On July 17, 2024, after basketball Team USA beat Serbia in Abu Dhabi, the arena DJ turned the record on. Steph Curry was heard saying, “Damn with this song. It’s not the only song in America.” Teammate LeBron James countered with, “I love it.”

Jermaine Dupri took to Instagram to voice his thoughts, stating, “The goal in hip-hop used to be impact, not sales, not charts — impact. How hard you could impact the streets.”

He continued: “That’s no longer the goal and — to me — that is the sole reason why rap isn’t what rap used to be because n—-s don’t care about impacting the streets no more.”

Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” possible Grammy nomination would further add to the rapper’s massive impact on the streets and the music industry. Rap enthusiasts can’t wait for what Lamar does next.
