In an effort to mobilize Black voters and counter what it calls “attacks on democracy,” the NAACP has launched a series of town halls across the country more than a year ahead of the 2026 mid-term elections.

The initiative comes as the civil rights organization aims to inform and empower communities on key issues. They are also recruiting volunteers and mapping out local strategies for voter engagement.

“It may still seem far away, but the 2026 midterm elections will determine whether our democracy still holds on or whether the people surrender their power to a king,” NAACP President Derrick Johnson said in a statement.

Johnson emphasized the moment’s urgency, pointing to recent policies that he argues are negatively impacting Black Americans. He mentioned cuts to social safety net programs, immigration enforcement raids, and rollbacks of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The town halls are designed to connect past liberation struggles with the present demands of the community. They also aim to prepare voters for a critical election cycle.

Key Issues and Locations

The NAACP’s town halls are focusing on several core critical issues pertinent to the well-being of Black Americans.

These include discussions on how federal budget decisions affect local communities, especially regarding Medicaid expansion and food assistance programs. The forums also address the “attacks on democracy” through legislation that could impact voting rights.

The first event was held in Newark, New Jersey, featuring local leaders Mayor Ras Baraka and Rep. LaMonica McIver.

The NAACP is not limiting its efforts to a single region. They have plans for additional town halls in key states such as Texas, California, North Carolina, Ohio, Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, New York, and Maryland.

The selection of these states suggests a strategic focus on areas with significant Black populations and intense political battles over issues like redistricting, which the NAACP has actively opposed.

NAACP Mobilizing a Grassroots Movement

Beyond simply informing the public, the town halls have a strong focus on civic engagement. They also aim to build a robust grassroots movement.

The events are designed to be a call to action, urging attendees to get involved. They can achieve this in volunteering and voting recruitment, grassroots organizing, and door-to-door outreach.

This strategy reflects a recognition of the need to start early to counter what the organization sees as a sustained and coordinated effort to suppress voter turnout.

The NAACP is building on its previous efforts, which saw a $20 million investment in the 2024 presidential election. It also mobilized over 14.5 million Black voters.

The organization is now taking a proactive approach, aiming to strengthen community ties and ensure that voters are prepared and organized well before election day.

The campaign focuses on empowering local voices and holding elected officials accountable. They also aim to connect national policy decisions to their direct impact on people’s lives.

By laying this groundwork now, the NAACP hopes to foster a powerful and engaged electorate that will be a decisive force in the upcoming elections.
