In case you haven’t heard for the entire month of February, Mother Road Market is being intentional about hosting black-owned businesses. These businesses will be at the Shops at Mother Road Market, located at the corner of 11th & Lewis.
This initiative is part of the Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation’s (LTFF) goal to “decrease barriers for retail entrepreneurs,” says Shakori Fletcher, Partnerships Director for LTFF. “That’s the thought process behind having this pop-up, is how can we decrease the barriers that would normally prohibit someone from being able to take advantage of being in a heavy traffic area like utilities, and security system, and permits, and all those other things that would be an entry barrier.”
A city that was once home to a flourishing Greenwood District, also known as Black Wall Street, having successful black-owned businesses is in Tulsa’s DNA.
Unfortunately, so is a history of racism and systemic oppression.
Thankfully there are plenty of Tulsans and organizations doing the work to restore that history of black-owned businesses, transforming Tulsa into a national example reflecting our country’s diversity.
So for February, featured at their LTO | MKT (Limited Time Only Market) is a group of businesses and entrepreneurs from the Tulsa and OKC area that you can come to check out and support.
The Black Wall Street Times will highlight one business each week with a written piece and a video interview. You’ll be able to hear from the owner on their journey and inspiration as well as obstacles they’ve faced along the way.
