Issa Rae is breaking barriers, yet again, as the first person to receive a key to the City of Inglewood, California. The writer, producer, and actress attended the Taste of Inglewood festival where she was bestowed with the honor.
“I’m a little emotional,” said the powerful Hollywood player, who is originally from Inglewood. “The mayor really kind of flabbergasted me in that this is the first key in 114 years, so that’s a huge honor.”
In her award-winning series, Insecure, Issa Rae has often used Inglewood as a setting. She also showcased several Inglewood neighborhoods in her reality series Sweet Life: Los Angeles.
Why Issa Rae Received the Key
The accolades come directly from Mayor James T. Butts Jr., who highlighted Rae’s “outstanding contributions to our culture,” during his speech giving the honors. He referres to Rae as a “living legend.”
“I just want to thank you all so much for your support — thank you to the mayor, thank you to the city of Inglewood for making it so easy for us to film here, for helping us showcase this city that I love so much.”
“I have to give love to my grandparents who have lived here… my mom and my sister who live here actively and just for being here,” thanking her family for instilling a sense of service to the community in her.
By providing financial resources to her hometown, Rae continues to demonstrate her love for her hometown. She recently invested in local area coffee shop Hilltop Coffee and Kitchen, which now has three locations.
The honor was particularly sweet for Super Bowl Sunday, which was held at Inglewood’s SoFi stadium. The award also reflected her show Insecure, where Rae’s character once accepted a key to the city.
