WASHINGTON — Despite efforts to court Black voters with appearances by B-list celebrities at last month’s Republican Convention, former President Donald Trump’s favorability among this demographic plummets to a low 5% in key swing states. In contrast, Vice President Kamala Harris enjoys a 43% favorability rating. Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, fares even worse at 3%, while Harris’s vice-presidential pick, Tim Walz, holds a 21% favorability rating.

These results are from the New York Times/Siena College polls. They capture the voices of 1,973 registered voters across Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, conducted from August 5 to 9, 2024. These results reflect a strong preference among Black voters for the Democratic candidates over the Republican ticket. Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Ohio, and New Hampshire.

Other swing states in the mix to swing Democrat or Republican in the 2024 Presidential Race include Florida, North Carolina, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Ohio, and New Hampshire. These states have closely divided electorates, making them the focus of intense campaigning and key to determining the overall result of the election.

Racial Insensitivity and Policy Criticisms: Why Black Voters have low favorability for Trump

Former President Donald Trump’s low favorability among the majority of Black voters is due to his rhetoric, policies, and actions, which they perceive as harmful to Black communities. Moreover, Trump’s presidency was marked by a series of statements and actions that many viewed as racially insensitive or outright racist, such as his handling of issues related to police brutality, his response to the Charlottesville incident, and his use of racially charged language in speeches and on social media.

Additionally, Trump’s policies on immigration, criminal justice, and economic matters often faced criticism for disproportionately affecting people of color. For example, his administration’s approach to rolling back affirmative action policies, cutting funding for social programs, and implementing harsh immigration policies contributed to the perception that he is not supportive of Black communities.

Trump further alienated many Black voters by associating with and supporting far-right groups, some of which have been linked to white supremacy. The combination of these factors led to a low level of favorability for Trump among Black voters during his presidency and even today.
