Most of us interact with our city in ways we might not even realize—from the quality of our schools to the safety of our neighborhoods. But how often do we think about the person who shapes these aspects of our daily lives? Many people don’t realize the immense power a mayor holds in transforming a city. From improving education to fostering economic growth and ensuring inclusivity, a mayor’s influence can reach far beyond the surface. Understanding this role can make all the difference in choosing a leader who truly serves our community’s needs and aspirations.

Growing up in Tulsa, I’ve experienced the ups and downs of this city firsthand. I was a product of our public education system, relied on community resources, and eventually built my career here as an organizational development specialist. My goal has always been to create the healthy workplaces we all deserve—just as I now work alongside others to create a community where we can all thrive.

As a parent and advocate leading Padres Unidos de Tulsa, I see daily the challenges parents face in staying engaged with a public education system that often feels distant and complex. Yet, despite these hurdles, we persist because we believe in the potential of our children and our city.

Tulsa was the first city in Oklahoma to become a “Welcoming City,” a distinction that reflects our commitment to ensuring that all residents, regardless of background, have access to opportunities, resources, and a sense of belonging. To fulfill this promise, we need a mayor who not only understands our present needs but also has a clear vision for our future.

Monroe Nichols is that leader. His track record as Oklahoma’s state representative for District 72 speaks to his dedication to uplifting diverse voices and addressing the unique needs of our community. He has championed legislation that ensures every student receives a high-quality education, that all Oklahomans have access to healthcare, and that our economy benefits everyone. He has also worked to revitalize neighborhoods and reform our justice system—issues critical to Tulsa’s future.

What sets Monroe apart is not just his impressive resume, which spans government, private business, higher education, and the nonprofit sector. He has served as an aide to former Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor, as chief of staff to former OU-Tulsa President Gerry Clancy, and as economic development manager at the Oklahoma State Department of Career and Technology Education. His journey, unlike many in politics, isn’t about connections or legacy; it’s about a genuine commitment to the well-being of all Tulsans.

Monroe has a deep-rooted commitment to our city. He’s worked closely with local nonprofit organizations, served on boards addressing Tulsa’s social justice challenges, and has shown an unmatched ability to engage meaningfully with leaders and community members alike. His support for Tulsa’s immigrant community is another testament to his inclusive vision. In a state where undocumented immigrants contributed $227.5 million in state and local taxes in 2022—an amount that could rise significantly with work authorization, according to a July 30, 2024, study by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy—Monroe recognizes the value in every resident’s contribution and is committed to building a city where everyone can flourish.

Tulsa’s future is bright, but it demands leadership that truly understands and embraces the diverse needs of its people. Monroe Nichols is that leader. As a parent, a lifelong Tulsan, and a member of this community, I proudly support Monroe Nichols for mayor. I encourage my fellow residents to join me in supporting a leader who will help create the Tulsa we all deserve—a place where we all can thrive.
