WASHINGTON – Last night, Republicans took a victory lap, showcasing their control across all branches of government, while Democrats seemed to have no unified plan. Some skipped the event entirely, others staged a silent protest with signs, and a few pulled a ‘Bye, Felicia’ exit, walking out mid-speech. However, it was Rep. Al Green (D-TX) who stood as a lone voice of defiance.

As is tradition, Sen. Elissa Slotkin delivered the Democratic rebuttal, though it struggled to compete with the spectacle on the House floor.

Trump’s speech was packed with clickbait soundbites. He floated acquiring Greenland and the Panama Canal ‘by force if necessary’ while pushing aggressive tariffs, gutting DEI policies, and targeting the LGBTQ+ community. He claimed to seek peace between Ukraine and Russia but did not clarify whether that peace would involve Ukraine ceding more territory to Russia.

While Trump commanded the room, one Democrat refused to let his words go unchallenged.

Rep. Al Green’s Stand: A Lone Voice of Defiance in a Sea of Chants

But in the midst of what many considered chaos, one Democratic congressman from Houston, Texas—a Black man who lived through the civil rights era—stood up and spoke out in defiance, disrupting Trump’s moment.

“You have no mandate to cut Medicaid,” Rep. Al Green repeatedly shouted from the center of the crowded House Chamber floor.

Republicans attempting to drown Green with chants of “U-S-A” were met with the 77-year-old’s good trouble persistence.

A visibly angry Vice President JD Vance stood behind a disgruntled Trump as Speaker Mike Johnson banged his gavel. Johnson then ordered the Sergeant at Arms to have Green removed from the Chamber.

As he exited, Al Green told members of the media, “I was making it clear to the president that he has no mandate to cut Medicaid.”

“I have people [in my district] who are very fearful,” Green continued. “These are poor people, and they only have Medicaid in their lives when it comes to their healthcare.”

Medicaid is a joint program between the federal government and state governments that ensures low-income Americans can pay for medical care. House Republicans just passed a Trump-backed budget that included tax cuts for seniors, while slashing government spending by over $800B. Experts argue those cuts are not possible without cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, or Social Security.

“I want [Trump] to know that his budget calls for deep cuts in Medicaid. He needs to save Medicaid, protect it,” Green added.

The congressman also told members of the media that he would be drafting articles of impeachment against Trump.

“This President is unfit,” Rep. Al Green told the media. “He should not hold the office.”

Social media praises Rep. Green, calls on more Dems to actively protest Trump

Americans quickly took to social media to praise Green for his stand.

“Rep Al Green was the only one to stand up in Congress against the increasingly totalitarian direction USA has taken,” said Threads user Christian Norway. “The world needs more Al Greens.”

“Al Green is a Texan,” wrote user Travis Meadors. “Bruh, Texas dems really have been heating up. Jasmine Crocket, James Talarico, Lloyd Dogget, now Al. My Texas pride is back alive due to these fellow Texans.”

Aside from a handful of Democrats like Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) and Maxwell Frost (D-FL), most sat silently. Some held up signs reading “False” and “Lies,” while others wore pink in protest.

House and Senate Democratic leadership reportedly urged members to take a tamer approach during the speech.

The visuals of Democrats sitting silently while Trump pushed lies and hate from the dais fell flat for many watching.

MSNBC host and former Biden and Harris aide Symone Sanders Townsend criticized the move. “Why are democrats just sitting there?” she wrote on X. “The signs are not landing. It is giving bingo! Sigh.”
