In a stunning and chaotic development that has rocked the University of Michigan’s football program, head coach Sherrone Moore was abruptly fired for cause late Wednesday following a university investigation into an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
The situation escalated mere hours later when local police confirmed Moore was detained for an unrelated alleged assault.
Sherrone Moore is accused of violating “University policy”
Athletic Director Warde Manuel announced Moore’s immediate termination, citing “credible evidence” of a policy violation. “This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” Manuel stated.
The dismissal for cause is significant, as it is expected to allow the university to avoid paying the former coach’s multi-million dollar buyout, which was reportedly over $13 million.
Moore, who is married and a father of three, had taken over as Michigan’s full-time head coach in 2024 after previously serving as offensive coordinator and helping lead the team to a national championship.
His short tenure as head coach saw the Wolverines finish this season with a 9-3 record. The investigation into his conduct reportedly began with an anonymous tip in November.
Online speculation fuels the consensual relationship
While the university has not publicly identified the staff member involved, online speculation has centered on the executive assistant to the head coach.
The university has confirmed the relationship was consensual, but that it violated U-M’s strict policy regarding relationships between employees in supervisory or authority roles.
Shortly after the university’s announcement, reports surfaced that Moore had been detained by police in Saline, Michigan. Pittsfield Township Police later confirmed they had taken a suspect into custody for the purpose of investigating an unrelated alleged assault.
Police have shared only a few details
Law enforcement officials have been cautious with details, stating only that the incident does not appear to be random and that a person was jailed pending a review of charges by the prosecutor. They have not explicitly linked the detention to the university’s firing.
Moore’s exit marks the third high-profile scandal involving a Michigan football coach in the past two years, following the dismissals of Matt Weiss (for criminal investigations into computer access crimes) and Chris Partridge (for his role in the sign-stealing controversy).
The immediate firing and subsequent arrest plunges the football program into fresh turmoil as it prepares for a bowl game and faces a sudden coaching search at a challenging time in the offseason.

Police in Pittsfield Township, just outside of Ann Arbor, said Wednesday afternoon they received a call from a woman who said a man was attacking her and had been stalking her for months.

The prosecution said in court that after the victim broke up with Moore on Monday, Moore allegedly kept contacting her with calls and texts, and she did not respond.
Moore, who has been in custody since his arrest on Wednesday, appeared in court virtually on Friday, dressed in white jail clothing.
The focus now shifts to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office, as the legal and professional fate of the once-promising coach hangs in the balance.
Moore was ordered to have a GPS monitor before he’s released on a $25,000 bond.
The judge instructed Moore not to contact the alleged victim, to use alcohol or any other substances, or to possess a weapon.
He’s set to return to court on Jan. 22.
