Music icon Lil Jon has always done things on his own terms—and that includes telling his story.
The Grammy Award-winning rapper, producer, and DJ has officially announced his forthcoming memoir, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me, slated for release on October 20, 2026, through Black Privilege Publishing, an imprint of Atria Books/Simon & Schuster. The imprint is owned by media mogul and host of The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne Tha God.
Known globally as the “King of Crunk” and the voice behind some of the most recognizable party anthems of the early 2000s, Lil Jon is now pulling back the curtain on the man behind the mic.
From Atlanta’s club scene to global stardom
Born Jonathan Smith, the artist steps outside his star-studded lane in the book to deliver an intimate, unfiltered look at his life. The memoir traces his journey from his family’s roots in Wedowee, Alabama, to his early days navigating Atlanta’s club scene, where he landed his first DJ job at the New York Sound Factory.
From there, readers are taken through the rise of Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz and his role in shaping the crunk movement—a subgenre that helped catapult Southern hip-hop into the mainstream.

Telling his story on his own terms
Lil Jon also gets candid about the life events and revelations that led him to embrace meditation, herbalism, mindfulness, and Islam. He confronts immense personal grief as well, including the recent loss of his son, Nathan Smith, also known as DJ Young Slade.
“I’ve worked on a lot of different projects over the years, but this one right here made me dig deep and turn inward,” Lil Jon says in the title’s official announcement. “Y’all have heard my voice for over three decades, but here’s a chance to read what I really have to say about it all, and catch a glimpse into the innermost circles of both my professional and personal worlds. I’ve been blessed to amass enormous wins, but with that I’ve also had to endure immense hardships and painful losses privately and publicly… and I’m finally ready to share that with you all.” “This ride ain’t been an easy one,” reveals Lil Jon, “but who ever said chasin’ your dreams was easy?”
Behind the scenes of his career highlights
I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me revisits his collaborations with major names like Usher, Pitbull, Ciara, Ice Cube, Too $hort, and the Ying Yang Twins—collaborations that produced chart-topping anthems such as “Turn Down For What,” “Get Low,” and the mega-hit “Yeah!,” which earned him a Grammy for Best Rap Collaboration.
The book also takes readers behind the scenes of his performance at the Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show in 2024.
The memoir is already gaining praise from fellow industry notables, including Charlamagne Tha God, who says, “I’m honored to support Lil Jon in telling his story. His music once defined how we showed up in the club, and today it continues to inspire how we show up for ourselves. This book is an invitation to channel that same energy into growth and healing. We all screamed, “WHAT?!’—now, this memoir finally gives us the answer.”
More than just a memoir
Not just another hip-hop biography offering surface-level stories of studio sessions gone wrong or missed opportunities, the book chronicles Lil Jon’s growth as an artist, man, father, and trailblazer.
I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me seeks to capture the full scope of a groundbreaking career and a life lived at maximum volume—solidifying Lil Jon not only as one of the most dynamic performers of his era, but also as a deeply impactful storyteller.
