Another chapter in the Power universe is coming to a close this summer. Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres its final season on Friday, June 12.

Fans will finally see the resolution of the long-building conflict between Kanan Stark (Mekai Curtis) and his mother, Raquel Thomas (Patina Miller), a relationship that has defined the series from the start.

A Family Empire In Decline

Season five traces the fall of the Thomas family’s criminal empire across Queens, as key players fight to preserve what remains of their legacy. At the same time, Kanan steps further into his own power, carving out his place in the city’s drug trade.

The cast previewed the final season during the Evolution of Kanan: An Inside Look at Season Five panel at the 2026 American Black Film Festival, where Curtis, Miller, and London Brown, who plays Marvin Thomas, shared what viewers can expect.

“It’s the most explosive season. You’re going to see a lot of questions answered, and you’re going to see the work that we all put into making incredible television. Sacha Penn wrote and fleshed out everybody’s story lines and gave everyone a moment to shine,” Curtis said.

He added. “This role changed my life in immeasurable ways. I have grown as a person and as an artist. The exposure to the gifts that God has given me has allowed me to share them with the world.”

The Origins Of A Rivalry

Raising Kanan has chronicled the early life of Kanan Stark, who would later become the friend-turned-rival of Ghost, also known as James St. Patrick, in the original Power series.

Kanan first appeared in season one of Power, portrayed by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, driven by revenge against his former mentee. That pursuit shaped much of the original storyline.

Premiering in 2021, Raising Kanan serves as a prequel and the second spin-off in the franchise. Set in the 1990s, the series explores the forces that shaped Kanan into the ruthless figure audiences first met.

The Broken Bond Of A Mother And Son

Throughout the series, Kanan has struggled to step out of his mother’s shadow. Once viewing Raquel as a powerful figure to admire, he becomes disillusioned as he witnesses her ruthlessness, even toward him.

That realization fractures their bond and turns them into enemies.

The tension reached its peak in season four’s finale, “Gimme the Weight,” when Kanan and Raq faced off after the deaths of Kanan’s best friend and girlfriend. The moment culminated with Kanan pointing a gun at his mother.

Season five picks up in the aftermath of that confrontation, with both characters forced to reckon with what comes next.

“The repercussions of that last moment will be something that both of them have to deal with,” Miller said.

Miller continued. “The relationship between Kanan and Raquel is at a point of no return. You watched them go back and forth with their love, like the push-pull of mother and son. Now they are on opposite sides, and we get to see what happens.”

Setting The Stage For What’s Next

The final season also reintroduces Breeze, played by Shameik Moore. A key figure in the Power Universe, Breeze is the drug dealer who mentored Kanan, Tommy, and Ghost.

Season five offers a closer look at Breeze’s relationship with Kanan and how their alliance shapes the streets of Queens.

The final episodes will not only close out Kanan’s story but also help set the foundation for the newly announced series Power Origins, which will explore the early years of Ghost and Tommy.

The cast says the final season delivers both closure and emotional weight.

“You should tune in to this season of Raising Kanan because we answer a lot of unanswered questions,” Brown said. “It’s emotionally compelling this season. The stories we are about to tell are just so good.”
