TULSA, Okla. — The Heritage, History and Hope Mural located on Latimer Street and MLK Blvd. is complete. The Mural is a collaboration of Emerson School and Color Me True Destiny Programs.
The curator of the project, Mary L. Williams worked with Montessori Principal Diane Beckman and Nathan Picard of the Emerson School Foundation along with local support from the Tulsa Arts District. The mural also gained the approval of Emerson principal Elizabeth Taylor after a visit with Beckman.
The Mural is almost a block long and depicts the Heritage, History and Hope of the surrounding community including the momentous history and wealth of Black Wall Street. The entrepreneurial spirit in the Greenwood district can be felt as well as seen when viewing the mural.
It also highlights the movement in education in North Tulsa’s past and today’s present growth with iconic figures from each era.
Five talented and passionate local artists came together to beautify, and build an outdoor community classroom that will inspire, educate and foster conversations among all ages and ethnicities.
“As artists, we hope the mural will serve as a project piece for research among students and teachers to learn more about Black History on a local and national level. It is an effort to foster unity and understanding through visual arts within the changing dynamics of a community,” Williams said.
Future tours are being planned with Williams and the artists. Times will be announced at a later date. Schools and the community are welcome.
