At 22-years-old, standing at 4ft 8in, the short but powerful US athlete, the black girl from Spring, Texas, with the beautiful pearly white smile who won the hearts of global spectators at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, officially became the world’s most decorated gymnast — man or woman.
Simone Biles is a household name, boasting 24 world title medals. She surpasses Vitaly Venediktovich Scherbo of Belarus in world championship medals.
Biles is the sixth woman to win an individual all-around title at both the World Championships and the Olympics, and the first gymnast to do so since Lilia Podkopayeva in 1996 to hold both titles simultaneously.
Biles dominated the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championship by claiming her fifth individual all-around world-title, this weekend, in the individual all-around competition and doing so by two full points. She also led the US women’s team to another first-place team finish.
The decorated gymnast introduced two new skills to the sport of gymnastics in the floor exercise and on the balance beam and now has three skills in the sport named after her.
Biles is looking forward to leading the US women’s team to another gold medal at next year’s 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
