TULSA, Okla. — On Monday, the 34th celebration of Martin Luther King Day, Democratic candidate for Oklahoma’s First Congressional District, Kojo Asamoa-Caesar, released his campaign’s issues platform, titled “America’s Promise.”
Speaking on the inspiration for the platform’s title, Asamoa-Caesar explained, “At a sermon in Atlanta in 1965, Dr. King connected the American Dream to the words of our founding documents: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’ To build on what Dr. King said, I believe those words amount to even more than a dream. I believe they amount to a promise. At the time Dr. King was assassinated, he was busy mounting a Poor Peoples Campaign to march on Washington and demand a basic standard of living and human dignity for all in America. The people of District 1 are ready for a leader who will be bold enough to continue that work. As Congresswoman Barbara Jordan once said, ’What the people want is very simple – they want an America as good as its promise.”
The platform is divided into three main sections, with each section representing a major step in fulfilling America’s Promise. The first focuses on education and childcare, the second on health and wellbeing, and the third on justice and reparations.
In addition to the release of “America’s Promise,” the campaign will be holding a number of public forums to gain citizen insight and feedback.
