On Monday August 15th, the media news publication JaGurl TV announced their plan to release/launch their first digital cover ‘JAGURL’ in January 2023. “We are excited about the evolution of JaGurl TV. The brand as a whole has made a huge online news presence and this will allow more celebrities stories to be told in a positive light” says JaGurl TV Founder and CEO Ravin Williams.
The Black Wall Street Times spoke with Williams about the next phase of JaGurl TV and her 15 year history in the entertainment industry.
Born in Carbondale Illinois before moving to Atlanta, at 14 years of age, she and her friend thought to start their own online radio show ‘JaGurl Radio’ after gaining popularity opening up on Soulja Boy at Center Stage in Atlanta Ga in 2007; the rest has been history. Spotting talent at an early age, Williams was literally on the scene in the “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” video in 2009 which has over 523 million views.
Williams states she felt comfortable using her experiences in front of the camera to learn more about the artists she was naturally around and learning about them beyond the typical headlines.
When she’s not doing pilates and bumping Diddy’s 2010 classic Last Train to Paris, Williams is strategizing to “focus less on the toxic culture that often fuels celebrity coverage, we’re intentional about being different.”
Williams states collaboration is also a part of her strategy, “There are outlets that push for different narratives that are in the community fighting for the culture and they’re not getting as much light as they should. ” She continued, “that’s another intention of JaGurl TV — creating that door so that other outlets can emerge.”
With the growing success of JaGurl TV and her Real Estate Investment Company, Bente Investment Group, Williams is a full time serial entrepreneur. Under the mentorship of Les Brown, Williams has had the honor of speaking at various events and on panels for Reebok, Georgia State University, Black Women in Media, Les Brown’s Power Voice Summit and more.
“Atlanta is the mecca for Black entertainment.”
From her early days of interviewing DJ Unk to her proudest interview with Viola Davis, Williams has interviewed more names than most – not an easy feat for the independently-owned JaGurl TV.
Williams credits her brand’s sustainability to the relationships built over time along with a consistent approach to asking smart questions. She later clarified, “I can always tell an interview went well when the talent reacts in shock that I asked a question not many people talk about or knowledgeable of what they’re doing in the community. It’s humbling and lets me know that I’m on the right track. I definitely still have more work to do to bring awareness to their stories.”
When asked what motivates her, Williams replied, “seeing the results, but in the midst of that, I have to remind myself to worry less about how things are going to get done, and trust that they will.”
JaGurl TV is moving on up and that’s the way it is.
Eager to expand her business further up north, Williams looks to take JaGurl TV to new heights in January 2023 with the release/launch their first digital cover ‘JAGURL.’
“We want to be of service to talent to show the impactfulness they have with their fans and audience,” says Williams. “A lot of talent have fans because they see something within them – whether it’s authentic, how real they are – whatever it is, fans connect with that. Our goal is to amplify that so that fans get the most from our interviews and articles.”
