Allegations that CNN excluded Black media outlets from covering the first 2024 Presidential Debate have ignited concerns about media influence and voter suppression. Prominent Black media organizations, including EBONY, Atlanta Black Star, and Atlanta Voice, were reportedly denied press credentials, raising critical questions about inclusivity and fairness in media coverage.

Critics widely condemn the alleged exclusion for undermining the democratic process and potentially marginalizing Black and Brown communities. Various representatives and organizations have called on CNN to address these claims.

โ€œI was very disappointed about CNN not credentialing Black media outlets,โ€ Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed on Roland Martinโ€™s Unfiltered. Mayor Dickens, alongside other Black media representatives, has reportedly reached out to CNN, emphasizing the importance of fair representation in media coverage. “I made some phone calls to CNN, and weโ€™re still making phone calls,” Dickens added.

Despite these efforts, Black media outlets have reported significant difficulties in obtaining credentials to cover the 2024 Presidential Debate. According to CNN, approximately 800 organizations received credentials. However, some Black media outlets allegedly missed the application deadline, which CNN cited as a primary reason for not being able to accommodate their requests, pointing to timing and security concerns.
