OKLAHOMA CITY – In their latest statement, the Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (OK-CADP) has pleaded for mercy for death row prisoner Emmanuel Littlejohn, 52. Meanwhile, he is scheduled to be executed on Thursday, September 26.

In 1994, a jury convicted Littlejohn for murdering Kenneth Meers, a convenience store owner, during a 1992 robbery. The crime resulted in Littlejohn receiving the death penalty. The details of the case, including the nature of the crime and the subsequent legal proceedings, led to his placement on death row and the scheduled execution.

Call for Clemency: Emmanuel Littlejohn’s Case Reveals Systemic Injustice

Dr. Elizabeth Overman, OK-CADP vice-chair, explains, “To say that Mr. Littlejohn fell through the cracks in the system is an understatement. This man never had a chance to succeed in this society. Now, he sits on the precipice of his own death hastened by the state. In this case, Oklahoma is once again culpable for not providing the necessary services and resources to his mother, his grandmother, and his schools. He was allowed to grow up under abusive circumstances.”

Dr. Overman highlighted the state’s eagerness to proceed with another execution despite extenuating circumstances, emphasizing that Emmanuel Littlejohn’s case is marked by significant personal and social deprivation.

She argued that implementing the death penalty is fundamentally wrong and indicative of an authoritarian state unwilling to scrutinize its history of flawed and unjust executions. Overman stressed that this is yet another instance of wrongful execution and called on the Oklahoma Pardon & Parole Board to grant clemency to Mr. Littlejohn on August 7.
