The Trump Administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by tech billionaire Elon Musk, is accelerating its cost-cutting measures in Oklahoma, shutting down nearly a dozen federal offices across the state.

The closures, aimed at reducing real estate costs, are expected to save an estimated $2.9 million but have raised serious concerns about job losses and service accessibility.

This comes a week after DOGE terminated the office leases for two federal agencies in Oklahoma: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Broken Bow and the Anadarko Office Bureau of Indian Affairs in Carnegie.

While some affected offices were already vacant, several closures—including those of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) in Seminole, Pawnee and Watonga, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) in Lawton—leaving employees without clear reassignment plans. The U.S. Attorney’s Office shutdown in Muskogee alone accounts for over $1.2 million in estimated savings, but its closure could disrupt federal legal operations in eastern Oklahoma.

Disproportionate Impact on Indigenous Communities

Five of the eleven closures affected agencies providing services to Native American communities. Though reportedly empty for years, the Wewoka BIA office was still considered a resource for tribal affairs in Seminole. It was fully operational, but its sudden closure left at least seven employees jobless.

Other agencies include the Indian Health Services in Oklahoma City and the BIA in Pawnee. The Black Wall Street Times contacted state officials for comment.

“Governor Stitt’s office is in close contact with our federal delegation and federal partners. But ate this point, none of those layoffs you listed have been confirmed. The Governor’s Office and DOGE-OK are not involved in decisions made by DOGE or federal agencies,” Governor Stitt’s office stated. “Governor Stitt has always been a stron advocate for cutting waste and ensuring tax dollars are spent wisely, and DOGE-OK will focus on identifying inefficiencies within the state government.”

Musk’s Push for Digital-First Government

Musk has defended the closures as part of a broader strategy to modernize federal agencies through automation and AI-driven services. Critics argue that the shift to digital services fails to account for rural residents and elderly citizens who rely on in-person assistance.

For many Oklahomans, the question remains: Is efficiency worth the cost when communities are left scrambling for essential services? With federal employees facing uncertainty, the debate over DOGE’s policies is far from over.
