The transformative drama The Chi returns for its eighth and final season on May 22 on Paramount+ Premium, with new episodes rolling out weekly. The season will consist of 10 episodes in total.

Created by Lena Waithe, the series debuted on January 7, 2018, to critical acclaim and quickly became a fan favorite, praised for its accurate portrayal of a community too often defined by tragedy rather than triumph.

This final season cements the show’s legacy as the longest-running Black drama series in the history of premium cable and streaming.

Picking Up After “Rebirth”

Season 8 picks up from the Season 7 finale, “Rebirth,” in which a stunned Rashaad (Jason Weaver) and Victor (Luke James) discover Alicia’s (Lynn Whitfield) body after she was gunned down by Roselyn (Kandi Burruss) in retaliation for Alicia’s alleged participation in the murder of Douda (Curtiss Cook).

As Rashaad and Victor attempt to move the matriarch’s body, police swarm the house, leaving their fates uncertain.

A Season of Closure

Paramount+ describes the final season as, “As The Chi enters its eighth and final season and its coldest winter ever, life or death choices must be made. The question becomes, who is willing to make them? Legacy, conflict, joy, and pain. It all collides in the biggest, most emotionally riveting way ever seen this season on The Chi.”

The network emphasizes that this final chapter will focus on closure, accountability, character development, and legacy, rather than introducing entirely new storylines.

Fans will follow the characters as they rebuild in the aftermath of Alicia’s death, navigate fragile alliances, and contend with the return of familiar faces. And when it’s all said and done—who will reign?

The series will also continue its tradition of weaving in storylines that reflect current social issues.

Along with Weaver and James, the final season will feature the return of Jacob Latimore as Emmett, Birgundi Baker as Kiesha, Hannaha Hall as Tiffany, Shamon Brown Jr. as Stanley, and Michael V. Epps as Jake.

Waithe Reflects on Ending the Series

Waithe first shared the news with fans on Instagram last October.

“When I created The Chi, it wasn’t just about making a TV show — it was about owning our narratives and telling our stories with truth, care, nuance and complexity,” Waithe wrote in a post sharing striking cast images from the previous seasons. “It was about showing the soul of the South Side — the beauty, the pain, the grit, and the magic that lives in every block, and in every family. After much reflection, we have made the decision to end The Chi with Season 8. I know, for the sake of our story and our characters, it’s the right thing. I am committed to delivering a final season that our Chi Family deserves.”

She continued. “It’s been the honor of my life to build a platform for artists to shine — not just in front of the camera, but behind the scenes as well. To helm the longest-running Black drama on television is a huge honor and it’s something I don’t take lightly. I’m deeply grateful to every single person who helped build this world — our writers, actors and crew who give so much of themselves to make this show what it is.”

The Chi Was More Than Just a Show

Fans expressed shock at the announcement of the series’s ending, with many urging the creator to reconsider.

That disappointment is a testament to the devoted fandom the show built over eight seasons, driven by its honest and nuanced portrayal of Black life in America. The Chi never sugarcoated the realities of life on Chicago’s South Side.

At the same time, the series went beyond depictions of crime, centering stories of community, family, grief, and the emotional consequences of every decision.

As the trailer for the final season reminds viewers: “Life comes at you fast, whether you’re ready for it or not. Everything has to come to an end.”

The Chi Season 8 premieres Friday, May 22, 2026, exclusively on Paramount+ with the Premium Plan. New episodes will drop weekly on Fridays, and all seven previous seasons are available to stream now.
