DETROIT, Mich. — The Food Freedom Fighters for Kamala are thrilled to announce their participation in the upcoming Unite For America rally in Detroit, Michigan, on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at 8 PM ET. This historic gathering, featuring Vice President Kamala Harris and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer with legendary media mogul Oprah Winfrey, aims to unite diverse groups across the nation in a powerful call to action for the upcoming election during National Voter Registration Week.

“This event is more than just a rally; it’s a movement,” said Tambra Raye Stevenson, MPH, MA, founder and founder of Food Freedom Fighters for Kamala and CEO of WANDA: Women Advancing Nutrition, Dietetics, and Agriculture. “Growing up in the heartland, freedom is an American as apple pie. So, as Food Freedom Fighters, we know that a Harris-Walz Administration will work together to create resilient food economies, healthier communities, and secure the rights of every American to access healthy, culturally meaningful, and affordable food. This is our moment to ensure that our voices are heard and that we bring food policy to the forefront of this November election because politics are on our plates.

Oprah Winfrey expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “It’s going to be so exciting to bring all the diverse groups together across the country. I think this will be one of the biggest voting rallies ever!”

The Unite For America event represents a pivotal opportunity for citizens to engage in meaningful dialogue about the critical issues facing our nation, particularly those affecting marginalized communities. Food Freedom Fighters for Kamala, along with other organizations, will join forces to amplify the message that food justice is integral to a fair and equitable society. This is a movement that welcomes everyone, regardless of background or affiliation.

As 13 Republican governors have deplorably blocked the USDA-funded Summer Nutrition Programs for children that only shrink local food economies as grocery prices soar, marginalized communities are disproportionately affected, often forced to choose between basic necessities and healthy food options. Recent USDA Economic Research Service data reveals that food insecurity rates are increasing, with 1 in 4 Black individuals and 1 in 5 Latino individuals in the United States experiencing food insecurity, especially women-headed households, compared to White households at just 7%. This disparity highlights the critical need for action to dismantle systemic barriers that prevent access to nutritious food.

In anticipation of this event, the Food Freedom Fighters have written an open letter to Presidential candidates in urging a comprehensive food policy agenda that adopts the Food Bill of Rights, a framework advocating for everyone’s right to access safe, cultural, affordable, and nourishing foods. The coalition believes that uniting our voices and actions can bring about transformative change in our food systems and promote health equity across America. This is not just a rally but a catalyst for nutrition security, which is national security.
