The teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT) is under attack in schools all over the United States.
As an educator, we don’t have to know every detail about an event or be an expert on said topic in order to hold space for our students to safely discuss their viewpoints and feelings. As a part of our training and ongoing professional development, we should be well-versed in vetting resources to present reputable information to our students to help them form, bolster, and/or negate their perspectives. We should know how to facilitate a conversation amongst our students in our classroom.
Let me be more direct: I am specifically referring to the refusal of teachers to have courageous conversations around Black Lives Matter, hate crimes against the AAPI community, and the civil unrest taking place between Israel and Palestine. This is not just the work of social studies teachers. These are human rights issues that impact us all, our students included.
Ignoring critical discussions on race is harmful to students
Opting out of these class discussions is simply not an option. It never really was, yet so many teachers, in their complacent and privileged mindsets, make conscious decisions to refrain from helping students become global citizens by teaching them critical thinking and analytical skills because it’s “too hard” or because it “doesn’t affect them” or because it’s “not a part of their content’s curriculum scope and sequence” or because — and this one especially irks me — “they don’t have the time to discuss it.”
Am I to understand that it is the sole plight of Black teachers to teach the Black experience? Asian teachers to teach the Asian experience? Palestinian and Jewish teachers to teach their experiences? Those are rhetorical questions for which I already know the answers. The racially and socio-economically divided demographics of our schools’ student bodies gave it away. The segregation in the American education system is firmly in place.
We witnessed during the Trump administrations’ reign how the Pulitzer Prize winning 1619 Project was vilified. In Smithtown, Long Island, right-wing, ultra-conservative hate groups like Save Our Schools have reared their ugly heads and raised their voices loudly to stop the teaching of systemic racism and other oppressive, colonizing entities because it is “harmful” to their almost exclusively White student population.
Some teachers appear relieved to see CRT banned
This fight to uphold white supremacist values and beliefs that perpetuate psychological, emotional, and physical violence against Black and Brown students is being played out on a national front in schools of all classifications throughout the United States. Why am I not seeing more teachers outraged by this?
My inclination is to believe that the lack of outcry is over- shadowed by the even bigger and collective exhale of teachers — White teachers — who are relieved by the denouncement of culturally relevant, responsive, and sustainable curriculum. These are teachers who have never had a desire to and who never will teach about anything not based in White privilege.
This apathetic approach to education, in my years of experience, is too often rooted in the educators own lack of learning. It’s rooted in their racist, sexist, homophobic, misogynistic, xenophobic beliefs.
If you’re an educator who has let this year go by without attending to the issues and events that matter most to our shared humanity and that directly or indirectly impact your students, their families, and their communities, then there’s no longer room for you in the proverbial inn. Exit stage left. The show is over. Your leading role has been cancelled without renewal.
Enough is enough.

Having been an educator over fifty years of my life, I find the teaching of Critical Race Theory to be insulting to parents who guide their children. Do we teach children why some people are homeless because they choose to. Do we teach children of the success of people with color? Do we teach children of the equality and intervention of people who labor. Why do we have to demean someone who is white and blame them for slavery that they had nothing to do with? Do we teach children how resistant people are to be productive citizens and not harm their fellow man?The author, Teacher Dukes says if you cannot support critical race theory as a teacher, you should quit. Let her evaluate her prejudice for whiteness and see how successful she will be. We are all created equil in God’s eyes.

BTW,I do not agree with what the author is trying to defend with his article. I live in this country for 20 years, and do not see any systemic racism or culture-based discrimination. I appreciate opportunity that this country presents to all immigrants. Poverty has nothing to do with racism or race-based lack of opportunity in this country. In order to succeed , children should learn not CRT or any other ideology at school, but rather math and since, perseverance and discipline . Being immigrant myself, and a father of two very successful children I have some expertise on the subject, I believe.
Yes, Washington was a slave owner, as were many other people at the time, in many countries, not just in the colony that later became the United States. And yes, in many countries, at different times, slaves were not black people or people of color. It is true, As is the fact, that Washington and other founding fathers created this country, that later abolished slavery, and set people free. Every country has it’s own dark times and great victories. I think America has more of the latter

My only problem with the term “critical race theory” is tgat it really isn’t a theory. Slavery happened, racism is real, and why anyone thinks it’s ok to avoid teaching these things because it’s uncomfortable but true is beyond me.
If you want to engage students teach them curriculum that is rigorous and relevant to them – Black characters, authors, history, etc.
Slavery happened. Racism is real. CRT, however, is not so much a theory (or the belief that racism is real), but rather a framework with which to analyze the world. CRT makes an individual search for racism, oppression, and “white supremacy” in every interaction, system or structure (Robin D’Angelo famously said “the question is not IF racism happened, but HOW racism happened). One can believe racism is real and support the commendable efforts to fix and confront prejudice and discrimination without falling for the extreme belief that one can only fix racism by dismantling all of our society’s structures and systems. Likewise, one can teach children about racism by incorporating different perspectives from a wide range of black scholars and intellectuals without having to rely solely one theory/perspective (critical thought is not what the author of this article suggests). Why is this important to me? I don’t want my brown children to grow up believing that they are the perpetual victims of an inescapable system that is rigged against them. Just look at what Howard wrote here and you realize the anger and resentment such belief system breeds. Toxic!
The majority of the comments above highlight just what an uphill battle this is, showing just how entrenched white supremacy in education is. I’m a 35 year teacher whose first 3 years were 86-89 in Lesotho, Southern Africa. During apartheid. Botha got nothin on US. But some of us are on it – been using a decolonizing curriculum for 15 years, and the young people know bullshit when they see it. Change gonna come ~~

I agree that it is not a theory. It is factual history, lived and confirmed by all of our ancestors. All the comments above that equate CRT with beliefs are based in delusion and the lived experience of privilege. History can certainly be taught in the home but it must be taught in our schools. Not the history as it is usually written by victors that whitewashes the institution of slavery and the generational trauma it has always and continues to manifest.
White people (yes, that includes me), that does not mean it’s your fault. Don’t make it about you. It is about history and what that history has done to people who look differently than you do and who have never enjoyed the privilege that you enjoy whether you are rich or poor. If you leave your home and you don’t have to think about the possibility that you will be killed for no reason other than the color of your skin, the shape of your eyes, the religious clothing that you wear, that is a privilege in this world. We can never achieve Dr. King’s Dream without confronting and understanding the history that has led us to this day.
Labels like Marxism are red herrings in this discussion. This is not about government nationalizing and taking control of all means of production. It is not about dialectical materialism. If you think that Marxism means something other than that, your education is lacking. CRT is about systemic oppression of people based on superficial physical characteristics and the geographical origins of their ancestors. It is a vile reality that really happened, happens, and continues to reverberate to this day. To end it we must confront it, name it, and call it out for the immorality that it represents in our society. It happened. We must correct it and be better than that.
It is on all of us, not for individuals to believe or disbelieve. It’s hard work and beliefs require neither evidence nor effort. Facts, not beliefs, are what should inform our education.

In my 20 years living in US, working, raising children, I have not seen any organization or institution, that does it’s judgment about people based on his/her skin color or shape of their eyes. Seriously. It always was merit and behavior based. That’s why this country had black president, has k generals , senators, business owners and milliners of any race and origin.
I think real systemic racism in this country vanished time ago. And now some people are trying to resurrect the issue , , pursuing their career or political goals.
Institutional or systemic racism is not what you think it is. It is when people living in places like Flint, MI have to raise their children with polluted water carried in decaying lead pipes and there is no national effort to provide them with safe drinking water. It is a system under which education is primarily funded through property tax so that people living in poor neighborhoods do not have access to the same educational quality that people living in wealthy neighborhoods have. It is unequal treatment of Black and Brown people by law enforcement and the courts, leading to high rates of incarceration for offenses that white people walk from. It is worrying every time you go out if you are going to have an interaction with the police that will end with your death. It is not being qualified for a mortgage when the next white person with the same income and assets as you does get qualified. It is doctors not prescribing the same medications to you that they prescribe to white patients because there is an unconscious bias that Black people do not feel pain the same as white people. It is reflected in the higher rates of infant mortality and mortality of mothers during childbirth due to preeclampsia, high blood pressure, and other conditions that they do not get treatment for. It is all this and more. All you have to do is be aware of what is happening every day in this country to see the effects of institutionalized racism. The reason it is termed institutionalized is because it is built into the structures of institutions and does not even require the conscious decision of individuals to have a harmful effect on Black people in the United States of America.

I wanted to edit my reply to add that I am not even beginning to address the reality of generational effects of the dehumanization that slavery imposed on millions of families by removing the men from the family structure and which Jim Crow legislation and the war on drugs continue to this day through the unequal incarceration rates I mentioned above. The effects of slavery did not just evaporate with the Emancipation Proclamation. White leaders enacted laws that ended Reconstruction that ensured that Black families remained economically and structurally disadvantaged, in many locations to this day. You cannot just dismiss that with hand waving because you aren’t looking at it. It is real.

It is social problem of poverty. People, living in those conditions are poor/low income people. It still boils down to “HAVEs and HAVE-NOTS”, and that’s, maybe, why CRT adepts are often described as Marxist .

Schools, education districts, property tax – yes, they all are different. In free market economy people are free to buy whatever neighborhood they can afford, paying higher price and higher taxes. But in the same time, in my son’s high school ( public magnet school, with merit -based acceptance) majority of students are not white. So, again, effect of ethnicity on the quality of education is very complex, I think. Statistically ,perhaps, you may conclude, that black communities have not as good schools, as white communities. But causality of this has to do with income, not race.

I believe that CRT is a twisting of history and is self-serving. (1) All races have experienced racism–EVEN WHITES! Numerous books are available on Amazon telling about white slavery in the Middle East between 1500 and 1800. (2) Even blacks were slaveowners in the U.S.; thousands of blacks owned black slaves. (3) Slavery was considered to be just fine everywhere in the world during the 1600s and 1700s; it was only about 1800 that anti-slavery thought began in Britain and the U.S; and of course hundreds of thousands of lives were lost to eradicate it in the U.S.; in fact, as a percent of the population more lives were lost during the War Between the States that in all of our wars combined. (4) CRT is just the latest excuse to blame Black culture’s shortcomings on the White population. (5) 99.999% of all technology was developed by Whites; Blacks have culturally appropriated it. (6) There should be no REPARATIONS WITHOUT REPATRIATION; Blacks who despise being brought to the U.S. should be given reparations only if they agree to renounce their citizenship and be repatriated to a Black country. Ghana has advertised for Black Americans to relocate there.
