New York Attorney General Letitia James is coming for twice-impeached former White House occupant Donald J Trump, and she’s prepared for a fight. The powerhouse attorney and her team have found numerous ??“misleading statements and omissions” on Trump’s previous financial statements that were used to obtain loans. Her team now wants to compel the former president and his children to testify.
Ms. James, who has also come after Facebook and Google over antitrust acts, as well as the National Rifle Association, noted that many Trump associates have been reticent to provide answers to her office’s requests for more information. The New York Attorney General’s office filed paperwork stating that, “witnesses closest to the top of the Trump Organization have asserted their Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination. Certain others have professed faulty memories or asserted that they were following instruction from more senior employees.”
The information Ms. James and her office are requesting relate not just to loans, but also to tax filing inconsistencies, which could have produced tax benefits the Trump Org may have used improperly. Ms. James alleges that Trump provided misleading numbers when evaluating his properties for tax purposes.
AG wants Trump and his kids to testify
In one case, Mr. Trump claimed that his primary home was nearly three times the actual size, along with other exaggerations about his net worth. Ms. James and her office believe that these allegations add up to fraud, which can be confirmed by eyewitness testimony.
Ms. James has requested that a judge order Trump and his older children to testify under oath, a move the Trump family has fought vigorously. According to a tweet by Ms. James, “No one in this country can pick and choose if and how the law applies to them.”
She then followed up with allegations that Donald Trump Jr and Ivanka Trump, as well as Eric Trump, “have all been closely involved” in the Trump financial documents, and “used fraudulent and misleading asset valuations on multiple properties to obtain economic benefits, including loans, insurance coverage, and tax deductions for years.”
For his part, Donald Trump and his family vow to fight Attorney General James, the former Democratic candidate for Governor of New York. The twice-impeached former President has actually sued Ms. James, with vague allusions that she violated his constitutional rights.
