Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, has been sentenced to a 10-year prison sentence after being found guilty of shooting hip-hop sensation Megan Thee Stallion in the foot. The unfortunate incident occurred subsequent to their departure from a Los Angeles party in 2020, casting a spotlight on the challenges Black women often confront when reporting abuse. The case concluded after a multi-day hearing that commenced on a Monday and concluded on a Tuesday.
Tory Lanez’s Guilty Verdict and Sentencing
The shooting incident, which unfolded after Lanez and Megan Pete, the three-time Grammy-winning artist’s legal name, left a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills residence on July 12, 2020, culminated in a dramatic trial. Lanez, 31, had previously pleaded not guilty but was ultimately convicted on three felony charges: assault with a semi-automatic firearm, carrying an unregistered loaded firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. These charges were leveled against him in December by a jury.
During the sentencing proceedings, Lanez appeared in an orange jumpsuit, addressing the court and taking full responsibility for his actions. Expressing remorse, he conveyed that if he could alter the events of that night, he would, acknowledging his wrongdoing and expressing his desire for personal growth.
“If I could change it, I would but I can’t,” Lanez said. “Everything I did that night, I take full responsibility,” he added. “I truly am just trying to be a better person.”
The gravity of the charges was underlined by the maximum possible sentence of 22 years and eight months behind bars. Prosecutors advocated for a 13-year sentence, underscoring that Lanez’s social media posts during the trial had re-traumatized Megan Thee Stallion, exacerbating the ordeal she faced.
